Overview

My Compass was a business directory for Ireland that we designed, built and ran ourselves from July 2021 to July 2024. It brought business listings with maps, a code of conduct, an online shop and a newsletter together in one WordPress site, and it is one of the builds we are proudest of.

The brief

As our own project, the brief was ours: a directory where businesses in Ireland could apply to be listed, manage their own profile and be found on a map, alongside a shop and a newsletter for the community that used it.

What we did

  • Designed and built the directory on WordPress, launched in July 2021.
  • “Add Business” and “List business” application forms.
  • A listing page for each business, with a map and profile editing.
  • A Code of Conduct for listed businesses (updated January 2022).
  • Moved the site onto Avada in October 2021 and added a WooCommerce shop, which sold deGoogled privacy smartphones among other products.
  • A newsletter and contact forms.
  • A redesign in WPBakery, developed on a separate copy of the site from 2021 to 2023.
  • Hosting on our own servers.

Outcome

The directory’s contact forms brought in hundreds of enquiries, with the busiest months in November 2021 and January 2022. The shop took orders from October 2021. The site ran for three years before it was taken offline in 2024.

Then and now

  • July 2021: directory launch on WordPress.
  • October 2021: Avada and WooCommerce shop.
  • 2021–2023: WPBakery redesign in development.
  • July 2024: last archived capture; the site is now offline.
